Holmium Metal
Holmium Metal
Holmium, discovered in 1878, is another silvery white metal. With the highest magnetic strength of any element, holmium is used to create the strongest artificial magnetic fields. It is also used as a burnable poison in nuclear reactors due to its capability of absorbing neutrons.
Holmium is a soft, malleable, ductile, silvery rare earth metal, also belonging to the lanthanide group of the periodic table. It has the highest magnetic permeability of any element, similar to dysprosium.
Symbol: Ho
Atomic number: 67
Atomic weight: 164.93033
Element category: lanthanide
Application of Holmium
Holmium is used in solid-state lasers which are widely used in microwave equipments and have applications in medical devices and optical fibers. Additionally, holmium is one of the colorants for cubic zirconia and glasses. Lasers, wavelength calibration standards for optical spectrophotometers, magnets, etc.
REE has been widely used in electronics, petrochemical, metallurgy, machinery, energy, environmental protection, agriculture. Rare Earth can be used to produce fluorescent materials, rare earth hydride battery materials, electric light materials, magnetic materials, hydrogen storage materials, catalytic materials, precision ceramic materials, laser materials, superconducting materials, magnetostrictive materials, magnetic refrigeration materials, optical storage materials, optical fiber materials.
The following abbreviations are often used:
• RE = rare earth
• REM = rare earth metals
• REE = rare earth elements
• REO = rare earth oxides
• REY = rare earth elements and yttrium
• LREE = light rare earth elements (Sc, La, Ce, Pr, Nd, Pm, Sm, Eu, and Gd; also known as the cerium group)
• HREE = heavy rare earth elements (Y, Tb, Dy, Ho, Er, Tm, Yb, and Lu; also known as the yttrium group)
